Obituary for Mildred Edwards

ALTON — Mrs. Mildred (Hayes) Edwards, 82, of Oak Hill Lane, died Monday
morning, Jan. 29, 2001 at her home here.

Born Feb. 15, 1918 in New Durham, she was the daughter of the late Colo
and Bertha (MacCarlie) Hayes. A lifelong resident of the area, she
graduated from Alton High School in 1935.

Mrs. Edwards and her husband, Glenn, had owned and operated the Glenn
Edwards Lumber Co. in Gilmanton Iron Works and Alton from 1942-1954.
They also owned and operated the Edgewood Restaurant in Alton from
1960-1972 and the Riverview Motel in Alton from 1973-1975, when they
retired due to health reasons.

Mrs. Edwards was a past matron of Alpha Chapter No. 47, Order of the
Eastern Star.

She was a member of the Community Church of Alton since the 1950s and
belonged to the Women’s Christian Fellowship of the church.

She was predeceased by her husband, Glenn Edwards, who died April 11, 1996.

Survivors include two daughters, Shirley and her husband, John J. Young,
of Alton and Patricia A. Edwards of Alton; one brother, Colo Hayes of
North Carolina; two sisters, Dorothy Horne of North Carolina and Roberta
Seace of Farmington; two grandchildren, John H. Young Jr. of Alton and
David A. Young of Lebanon; and four great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be from 2-3 on Wednesday afternoon at the C.E.
Peaslee & Son Alton Funeral Home, School Street, Alton. The funeral
service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Community Church of
Alton on Main Street with the Rev. Peter Bolster, pastor, officiating.
Burial will be in the spring at Pine Grove Cemetery in Gilmanton Iron
Works. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the
charity of one’s choice.
